For most of us who think about philanthropy and fund-raising, what first comes to mind may be whatever favorite charitable cause we choose to support.  Perhaps there are multiple causes.

If you actually work in fund-raising (as I did for nonprofit hospitals for nearly 40 years), the topic generally conjures visions of donors and prospective donors, usually individuals who can and will make a difference with generous giving.  In hospitals, we called these people grateful patients.
